19.07.20 — Words by Joshua Drakes. Introduced by & in conversation with Jaheed Hussain.
Emotion and intensity, beautifully captured through a lens. That’s our first impression of Seeing Red Magazine, a new platform by energetic creative, Joshua Drakes. We wanted an inside look at Drakes’ plans, as it’s founder and face behind the brand. At it’s inception, Seeing Red began in somewhat rebellious circumstances — founder Drakes hadn’t received any deserved opportunities yet, Drakes’ work excites us. Introspectively, Seeing Red will create a spark within others. Read on to find out a little more about it.
Introduce yourself! Who are you, what do you do?
My name is Joshua Raymond Drakes. I am a photographer and Graphic Designer based in Manchester.
What made you pursue Photography as a career?
Originally, I studied it as part of Interactive Media in university years ago but everything I’ve done is self taught. My original plan for my career was studying Graphic Design, but as time went on, I got back into photography. Mainly portrait and fashion photography is what interested me the most.
How would you describe your pictures, to someone who hasn't seen them before?
Romantic, energetic and movement.
Seeing Red is an upcoming, exciting platform. Describe it in a sentence.
Seeing Red is a platform for me to produce editorial content for myself, by myself.
How did Seeing Red come about?
It came from getting sick and tired of being rejected from other magazines I would send photoshoots to, so I took things into my own hands and created my own platform. Since starting it, it has given me a new focus with my work.
What are your upcoming plans for Seeing Red? We'd love to hear.
I’d like to have a book, at least one print issue featuring other creatives.
Are there any creatives you're inspired by currently? Any that have been doing awesome work?
I tend to try stay away from looking at other photographers work. Music and film is a great source of inspiration for me. I recently got inspired by a musician called Giveōn and it sparked an idea I’ve been wanting to create for a while.
Where do you picture Seeing Red in five years?
More editorial content, a bigger team behind me and its first issue.
