In the effort to create open, honest, raw and relevant conversations, BBC Radio 1Xtra have launched Inspire Me. An online forum, interactive masterclass and mentoring programme, dedicated to young adults and listeners between the ages of 16 and 25.
“The ethos of the programme is to educate and inform those that may feel restricted by their environment but have the determination and ambition to want better for themselves. The programme will arm young adults with life skills and general knowledge that is often missed or not taught in schools and perhaps not learnt later in life.”
With an inclusive stance, the programme is aimed at the Black community, but open for all who are interested.
“The current crisis of Covid-19 and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement across the UK has pushed our focus to create change at a in-depth level.
As 1Xtra is a brand that promotes black music and culture it is our responsibility to be part of the next phase; moving from conversations to actions.”
Since 2018, 1Xtra has taken the extra step to stay connected with disadvantaged communities, enlisting classes across both London and Birmingham. By taking their planned developments online, they want to reach a network on a scale that hasn’t been attempted before. It’s first forum session took place on the 9th of July; My Brother, My Sister — Exploring love and how beneficial it can be outside the context of romantic relationships. With plans to host sessions from the 23rd of July onwards, Inspire Me will touch on topics such as; Health, being Black and British and even Music as business. Attendees of various sessions will then have the chance to partake in a 12-month mentorship scheme under the guidance of successful Black creatives and people from all walks of life.
